WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE
600 Capitol Way North, Olympia, WA 98501-1091

March 9, 2001

Lingcod sport season, limits change in coastal areas

Action: Open the sportfishing season for lingcod in some coastal areas and increase the daily limit to two lingcod per day in all coastal areas. In Areas 1-3 (Columbia River north to Cape Alava), the lingcod season will open on March 16. In Area 4 (Neah Bay vicinity), the season will open April 16. In all four coastal areas, the daily limit will increase from one to two lingcod when the season opens.

Effective date: March 16, 2001 for Areas 1-3 and April 16 for Area 4.

Species affected: Lingcod

Location: Coastal marine waters (Marine Areas 1-4)

Reason for action: The most recent assessment of coastal lingcod indicates a slight increase in population size. In late 2000, the Pacific Fishery Management Council adopted a regulation which increased recreational fishing opportunity for lingcod in coastal waters under its management authority. In February, the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission adopted similar regulations, effective May 1, for adjacent state waters. This rule change enables anglers to participate in the increased fishing opportunities for lingcod.

Other Information: The 24-inch minimum size limit remains unchanged from last year.
