MIKE
MESEBERG’S FISHING REPORT
UPDATED
ON May
9, 2001
Water
Level 1043.56
Water
temperatures are hovering around the 60°F
mark. Daytime temps are rising and
fishing activity has improved. Now
the trout are biting. One of the
walleye tournament teams fished back on Winchester Wasteway as it meanders
through the sand dunes on Potholes Reservoir.
They caught zero walleye in two days but on Sunday they caught 28 rainbow
to 5 ½ lbs. Tournament rules
require they release all trout. Bass
are waking up again. This week we
released a 3 lb. smallmouth and largemouth to 4 lbs. on stick baits.
Crappie and bluegill have been very slow but with new heat we have begun
to hear about some.
MAR
DON DOCK
Perch
continue to show with great size. Many
jumbo perch 10” and over are being caught from the Mar Don Fishing Dock.
Rainbow have been fair from the dock.
Josh Cosmel from Kittatas used night crawlers on the bottom and landed a
27 lb. carp at the dock. Aaron
Jambro of Yakima fished a beetle spin bank fishing the rocks near the Mar Don
Dock for his bass. Rainbow to 3
lbs. were showing off the dock this week.
CRAB
CREEK
Needlefish trolled fast have been producing rainbows to 4 lbs. in the
main channel of Crab Creek. The
power line area is showing walleye to 6 lbs.
MEDICARE
BEACH
The good trolling is just around the corner.
With warming days trolling will only improve at Medicare Beach.
Trout limits have been reported but limits have not been common.
LIND
COULEE
Take a kid fishing for walleye in Lind Coulee.
Trolling or jigging has been good. Most
walleyes are under the 18” minimum. One
team from the walleye tournament pre-fished the Coulee last week.
In four days they caught almost 300 walleye but only three were over
18”.
GOOSE
ISLAND
Walleye fishing has been slow near Goose Island.
Smallmouth are starting to hit “Top Water” near the rock piles
between Goose Island and O’Sullivan Dam.
SODA,
LONG AND CRESCENT LAKES
Very limited reports. Rainbow
and perch have been fair.
WARDEN
LAKE
Warden Lake continues better than expected.
German Brown Trout to 3 lbs. have been reported with rainbows being the
majority of the catch.
WINDMILL
LAKE
Josh Rick form Issaquah used powerbait at Windmill Lake for five nice
rainbow.
2001
ROD MESEBERG SPRING WALLEYE CLASSIC
Seventy-four
teams caught 117 walleyes in the two day competition.
This is the most walleye ever caught in a walleye tournament on Potholes
Reservoir. All fish were released
alive to swim away to be caught another day.
The Columbia Basin Walleye Club did a great job of running the
competition under the navigation of club president Roy Andrews of Moses Lake.
After Roy’s years of being tournament director his dream to fish the
tourney was answered with an 11 lb. 4 oz. jumbo walleye.
The great thing about this lunker being caught during the tournament is
that the team of Todd Alison and Roy Andrews won $1850 in the big fish option.
Plus Jerry Spies , District Sales Manager for Lund Boats arranged $500
per day for big fish. Many sponsors
both local and from other regions were very gracious helping with the
tournament. First place was won by
the team of Ken Nass and Sam Gipson from Yakima.
This was Sam’s first tournament. Ken
captained a great tournament for the winners.
First place paid $3,689.00. Second
place was won by Charles and Verla Row. The
Row’s are active in the Columbia Basin Walleye Club.
They won $2116.40 for second position.
The Mac’s Lure Team of Kevin Steiner and Don Talbot finished strong on
day two of the competition with 26.1 lbs. After
being zeroed on day one they were happy finishing in third position.
Walleyes Unlimited representatives George Allan and Chuck Dunning enjoyed
the Saturday Night dinner of five turkeys cooked “Russell” style.
Man, were they good! All in
all things went great. We caught
more fish. We had an 11.4 lb.
Lunker Walleye. And nobody died or
went to jail… Oh, bye the bye, I
have been going to Walleye Club meetings for some time now.
One night I got up to use the restroom and when I sat back down I was
elected Tournament Director or something like that…
Seriously I’ve really enjoyed working with the team of Walleye Club
members at the 2001 Rod Meseberg Spring Classic.

CAST
AWAY FISHING AND TOURS with Levi Meseberg
Levi Meseberg is creating a new business.
He will be providing guided fishing trips as well as boating tours for
bird watching or families that want to see the Sand Dunes on Potholes Reservoir.
Levi will be using a specially designed 21’ Alumaweld boat equipped
with a sport jet for power. The
boat will be great for shallow water running in the dunes and it has a 14O bow
which takes waves much better than a traditional flat bottomed jet boat.
Bass fishing has began and good trolling for trout is very close.
Don’t miss the boat! For a
brochure call 1-800-416-2736.
STUMP
JUMPER GUIDE SERVICE
Skip Davis will be guiding bass fishing trips on Potholes Reservoir.
He may have gone to Monroe but he is not forgotten.
Skip will travel to the Columbia Basin when he has bookings.
For information call Skip Davis at 1-425-483-3117.
MICHAEL’S
RANCH
For quality trout fishing on Duane Michael’s Ranch call 1-809-488-9819.
The cost is $125 per fisherman. Fish
on private property on excellent trout water. (Reservations required)
CRAPPIE
POND IN LIND COULEE (DREAMS DO COME TRUE)
A dream of my father, Rod Meseberg, and Ron Sawyer of Cascade Marina in
Moses Lake and Pasco reached a tangible status on April 5, 2001.
The original idea of the Central Washington Fish Advisory Committee was
to find a sheltered cove in the Lind Coulee arm of Potholes Reservoir and create
a “Crappie Pond”. It sounds
easy doesn’t it? Well now it will
be a reality. With the blessings of
the Department of Fish and Wildlife, donated time by retired surveyor Dick
Hemore of Moses lake and retired Boeing engineer Dave Smith, now of Moses lake
and private sector money donated to the Rod Meseberg Memorial Fund, the Crappie
Pond will happen. Jeff Skerlitz is
the Habitat Enhancement Coordinator for the Warm Water Management program of DFW.
Mr. Skerlitz of Olympia joined Jeff Korth, DFW Region II Fish Biologist,
with Ron Sawyer, Dick Hemore, Dave Smith on a boat ride captained by Dave
Meseberg of Mar Don Resort and determined the Crappie Pond in Lind Coulee very
doable. Especially with engineering
and survey work being donated by the private sector.
The adult spawning crappie will be transported to the Lind coulee by the
DFW personnel. One key factor is
raising donations to the Rod Meseberg Memorial Fund to buy the adult crappie.
These donations are tax deductible.
SMOKED
TROUT
Don’t miss out on a wonderful taste treat.
Bring your trout (not cleaned) and your license to the Mar Don Store to
have your trout smoked. Due to
rising costs this year we must raise the price for smoking fish.
New price is $18.00 for a limit of 5 or $4.00 per fish (three fish
minimum.)
BIRDERS
CORNER
At the intersection of Frenchman Hills Road and Dodson Road many species
of birds including migratory waterfowl that frequent this area may be sited.
Just proceed across Dodson Road on Frenchman Hills Road for approximately
500 yards and you will find a designated viewing area to park and enjoy.
North of Winchester Wasteway on the east side of Dodson Road, the Moses
Lake Audubon Society in cooperation with the DFW created a handicapped access
blind for bird watching. Also, the
Moses Lake group helped create a 2nd blind that encompasses the
option for a 2 ½ mile walking trail. This
area provides excellent bird watching. Enjoy
some time at the marsh. It is good
for the soul. Also it gets me
pumped up for duck season!
DAILY
CATCH RULES ON THE MAR DON DOCK
Please give us your input on the Daily Catch Rules.
Use info @mardonresort.com to give us your opinion, good or bad.
We appreciate your harsh criticism and we really enjoy hearing all sides
of the issue.
PERCH
– 7” minimum – no more than 25.
CRAPPIE
– 8” minimum – no more than 25 (STATE LIMIT) (State limit on crappie and
bluegill=25 mixed crappie and bluegill on Potholes Reservoir.
BLUEGILL
– 5” minimum – no more than 25 (STATE LIMIT) The 2 day possession on
crappie 25+25=50. Legally you may
only possess a total of 50 crappie or you are breaking the law.
BASS
– no size restrictions – no more than 5.
TROUT
– no size restrictions – no more than 5.
WALLEYE
– 18” minimum – no more than 5 with only 1 over 24”.
We
will deny access to our dock to anyone that over catches.
The people that break our new Daily Catch Rules will be placed on our
“GAME HOG” list. We are having
signs built to illustrate this. I
have discussed the Mar Don Catch Rules with DFW enforcement.
We may deny access to the dock.
My family has been operating Mar Don Resort since April 6, 1972.
We have seen fishing at it’s best and at it’s worst.
My family strongly believes in the Daily Catch Rules.
It is my strong desire that we quickly establish state limits in
categories never before with limits or the new fish we are witnessing on
Potholes Reservoir will not be allowed to flourish.
Fishermen love to have success when they spend a day at the lake.
Success will continue if we exercise moderation.
I feel it is an educational process.
These Potholes Reservoir Spiny Rays will disappear again unless we can
educate the public. These fish are
not meant as a subsistence food source. These
fish are dedicated to a wonderful recreational fishery.
The day on the lake, the family fish fry may be enjoyed for years to come
if we learn to keep those excellent table fare spiny ray in MODERATION!!!
Soon I hope it is the law.
POTHOLES
RESERVOIR WATER LEVEL
I called the office of Water Operations at the Bureau of Reclamation to
get the facts on the predicted status on water level for Memorial Day weekend.
I was told the water level will not rise the rest of the year.
By May 26, 27 and 28 the water elevation on Potholes Reservoir will be
1042 ±
.2 to .4 of a foot. This is a lower
level than we have seen in many years. Many
factors are in this equation. Due
to the low flows at FDR pump options are limited, plus the salmon issue and of
course hydro electric power. As
well as many other intangibles. The
bottom line is we will have camping in the dunes like years ago on Memorial Day
weekend.
MIKE
MESEBERG’S FISHING REPORT
UPDATED
ON May
1, 2001
Water
Level 1044.38
Typical
Spring weather again this week is the entire story.
Temperatures in the 70°
range and the need for mosquito spray was the story during the week but when the
weekend arrived so did cooler weather, some rain and a tough south west wind.
The beauty of the Potholes Recreation Area is that even during cold and
bad weather fishermen have options. Hardy
walleye fishermen pre-fishing for the 2001 Rod Meseberg Spring Walleye Classic
fought high winds and white caps to catch a very limited walleye in Crab Creek
this week. One pre-fisherman caught
walleye between Goose Island and O’Sullivan Dam.
Each group indicated their released walleye had completed the spawn.
Dock fishermen collected perch to 13” this week.
Bank fishermen camping at Mar Don above the flooded beach used powerbait
and crawlers for rainbow to 5 lb. 8 oz. Even
with bad weather and wind we had some good news.
I remember my dad saying, “You don’t need to catch fish to have a
great fishing trip.” That may be
true but if I don’t catch some fish I feel like something is missing.
Some fish not limits has been the pattern on trout activity on Potholes
Reservoir for trollers. All we need
is Mother Nature to smile on us and the trout trolling will kick in.
Bass fishermen are doing only a little better this week but some good
catch and release reports are coming in. Mike
Anslinger, Potholes Texaco worker, released a 5 lb. largemouth fishing with Dick
Hemore at their secret hole this week.
MAR
DON DOCK
Sunny warm weather during the middle of the week allowed good times and
good perch with some trout on the Mar Don Fishing Dock this week.
Don Salom of Lewiston, Idaho used crawlers on the bottom for his dock
perch to 12” this week.
Jerry,
Kyle and Kurtis Corbin with Steve Bentz of Yakima used both crawlers and
powerbait for rainbow to 2 lbs. and perch to 12” from the Mar Don Dock.
CRAB
CREEK
Needlefish trolled produced Crab Creek rainbow to 2 lb. 8 oz. for Othello
resident Todd Symonds.
SAND
DUNES
Issaquah resident Jae Warner used Uncle Walt’s Diamond Ring Spinner
with night crawler and found rainbow to 3 lbs.
GOOSE
ISLAND AREA
Frank Norman of Yakima was hunting for schools of perch near Goose
Island. Frank found his limit of
smallmouth bass to 3 lbs. instead.
LIND
COULEE
Carmon Haney of Yakima used a night crawler under his bobber for Lind
Coulee trout to 2 lb. 4 oz.
BLYTHE
LAKE
Blythe Lake is a great place to get away.
It lies at the end of a dead end road and normally receives very little
fishing pressure. Ben McVittic from
Ashford used ‘mallow and crawlers on the bottom for his 4 lb. 12 oz. and 2 lb.
rainbows at Blythe Lake
WARDEN
LAKE
Warden Lake just opened on April 28, 2001.
Ray Hansen and Todd Bonnifield of Marysville trolled Rapalas and Warden
Tackle’s new DC-13 for three German Browns to 17” and rainbow to 15”.
Using a Wedding ring tipped with night crawler, Bothell residents Ken
Warren and Kevin Hazelwood had a gas catching Warden Lake rainbow to 4 lbs.
Using lead core trolling line and needlefish produced rainbow limits at
Warden lake for Kent resident Boyd Bell.
SAGE
LAKE
The last couple of years Sage Lake has been hit and miss for trout
fishing but we’ve seen some quality trout production.
Adam Steffens and Jamie Russell of Tacoma brought the best trout catch I
can remember from Sage Lake. Adam
has this lake figured out. He and
Jamie used large night crawlers for six rainbow from 5 lb. to 8 lb. (weight
taken after the fish were cleaned.) Adam
indicated while bank fishing they lost the big one.
He estimated the escapee was between 12 and 15 lbs.
(Now that’s a great fish story, with evidence.)
2001
ROD MESEBERG SPRING WALLEYE CLASSIC
The walleye tournament is open to the public.
The entrance fee is $200 per team. The
Columbia Basin Walleye Club voted to move this event from the fall to a spring
event. This years event is May 5th
and 6th. The spring
allows the event a larger lake and I’m sure we will surpass last years
registration of 28 teams. In
addition to more participants for the walleye tournament we are also looking for
more donations toward the event. This
non-profit organization generates most of it’s money at the raffle.
If you would like to donate raffle prizes or money or if you would like
to donate money to the Rod Meseberg Memorial Fund contact club president Roy
Andrews (509-765-9412 or 509-750-2503) or tournament director Mike Meseberg
(509-346-2651 or 509-346-9622). The
Rod Meseberg Memorial Fund is used to buy warm water fish to be planted in
Washington waters.

MESEBERG’S FISHING REPORT
UPDATED
ON April
23, 2001
Water
Level 1044.65
Now we are seeing some 58°F
water in the sand dune area. Spring
weather conditions did not give us very good weather this past week, with the
exception of Saturday and Sunday being mostly sunny.
Trout fishing has noticeably slowed down but our perch are just HOT.
The large size on the perch is amazing.
Many ringtails over 10 inches are showing all over Potholes Reservoir.
I have never seen such jumbo perch on a daily basis.
If you like jumbo perch get over here before things change.
Crappie need more heat to pick up. Lately
crappie reports are slow. Walleye
continue very tough. The post spawn
walleye bite is just around the corner.
RESERVATIONS
– MOTHER’S DAY WEEKEND SPECIAL
One of the most dangerous things a fisherman can forget is MOTHER’S
DAY. The Mar Don Café will have a
breakfast and a dinner buffet on Mother’s Day.
Mar Don Resort Camping will be ½ price for Mother’s Day Weekend if you
call for a reservation and mention the Mother’s Day Weekend Special.
We’re here manning the phones daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. to accept

If you have specialized questions about specific camping space
availability call and speak to Ron at 1-800-416-2736.
MAR
DON DOCK
Jerry and Terry Parkinson, Mar Don residents, enjoyed great perch fishing
at the dock with jumbo perch over 10”. Night
crawlers worked for perch to 10” for Renton resident Galen Cheney.
The Brannon’s Annual Spring Break netted jumbo perch and trout to 3
lbs. Kenny Schleif of Bonney Lake
used crawlers on the Mar Don Dock for nice perch.
Johnny and Josh Fugate of Bonney Lake used crawlers for their dock trout
and perch. Galen Cheney of Renton
landed jumbo dock perch on crawlers. Ryan
Poitra of Renton caught his dock perch on crawlers.
Mike Shryolk of Seattle was very happy with his three nice dock perch.
15 perch made a great day for Auburn resident Kyle Smith.
Patrick and Barbie Dailey of Othello caught dock perch to 13”.
Kellen Turner of Seattle caught dock perch to 10”.
Josh Cook of Benton City with two friends caught a basket of perch to
13” on the Mar Don Dock.
SECRET
HOLE
Scott Brensper of Milton used a Colorado Spinner in an unforgettable seep
lake that Scott forgot the name of to land rainbow to 4 lb. 4 oz.
Those lost days in the desert make great days off…
BLYTHE

Dawna Russell and Brett Brannon of Enumclaw fished Blythe Lake with
crawlers for their trout.
WARDEN

22ND
POTHOLES OPEN BASS TOURNAMENT
Mother nature smiled on both days of the 22nd Potholes Open
Bass Tournament with very good spring weather.
Many recognizable faces fished again this year.
The Open begins the tournament bass season for many tournament anglers.
With less pressure than many highly competitive tourneys the attitude of
the participants is always very relaxed at the Potholes Open.
With such a tradition this event is professionally run by the Potholes
Bass Club. The competition was won
by the team of Raul and Larry Harnasch from Ephrata with 22.92 lbs. of bass.
The Harnasch brothers also won 1st place at the Potholes Open
in 1998 and 1999. They are the only
3 time Champions. Big Fish on the
first day (Saturday) was won by the team of Dennis and Sue Boyd with a 5.38 lb.
largemouth. Big Fish on the second
day was a 6.03 lb. largemouth caught by the team of Palmatier and Palmatier.
Charlie Lynch and Jeremiah Trip took 2nd and Dick and Roger
Hemore took third. Twelve year old
Donel Sapp and his dad Harmon Sapp Jr. took fifth place. Donel landed a 4.2 lb.
largemouth on Sunday. Gary and Opal
Lamar of Moses Lake have been spearheading the Potholes Open for over half their
married life. Their names are
synonymous with the Potholes Open Bass Tournament.

CAST AWAY FISHING AND TOURS with Levi Meseberg
My son is creating a new business. He
will be providing guided fishing trips as well as boating tours for bird
watching or families that want to see the sand dunes on Potholes Reservoir.
Levi will be using a specially designed 20’ Alumaweld boat equipped
with a sport jet for power. The
boat will be great for shallow water running in the dunes and it has a 14°
bow which takes waves much better than a traditional flat bottom.
For a brochure call 1-800-416-2736.
All
bass that were caught were released. Baits
used were spinner baits, plastic grubs, Rapala Shad Rap and Warden Lures new
D-C2 and 8.
Take
a little walk back down memory lane when Potholes Reservoir was loaded with
crappie in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Wouldn’t
it be great for future generations to be able to enjoy good crappie fishing.
