In Alaska lots of charters opt to use a large shark hook instead of a harpoon.  This involves more bend-your-back, over-the-rail effort. When fishing for halibut I always have a shark hook handy, just in case.  Often times you can't take harpoons with you for various reasons.  Given the choice, however, I favor using the harpoon on halibut over 40 pounds.

This  halibut weighed 43 pounds.
